Ice Cream

La Abejita Michoacana is a Mexican ice cream shop in Taylors, carrying the paletería tradition that takes its name from the state of Michoacán. That heritage runs on bright fruit flavors, paletas, and other frozen treats made in a style you will not find at a standard American scoop counter. Beyond the frozen case, it works as a dessert and sweets stop for the east side of the Upstate, with confections and snacks to round out a visit. The name means "the little bee," and by the reviews, it has built a loyal local following in the Taylors area.

Ice Cream

The shaved ice here starts with fresh cane sugar and is made by hand, and the flavor people keep coming back for is the sno cream, a house-made creamy version reviewers single out again and again. It is a small walk-up window in Edwards Forest Plaza on Wade Hampton, an old-school stand with a few umbrellas out front to sit under while your cone melts. Cash only, and open just for the warm stretch of the year, roughly April into late August. Past the sno cream there are more than sixty flavors to work through, all made in house, from cotton candy and blue raspberry to cherry cola and mango, priced low enough that a whole carful of kids will not dent your wallet. It has been a Taylors fixture since 1987 and has stayed family-run the whole way, which is why you will spot grandparents, parents, and kids standing in the same line. That is what makes it a summer-evening ritual for so many Upstate families: bring the kids, cool off from the heat, and spend almost nothing doing it.
