Firebirds Wood Fired Grill

The name is also the method. Everything here starts over an open hardwood fire, the kind of cooking that gives steaks their char and seafood a little smoke before it reaches the table. The room leans polished-casual, dressy enough for a night out but relaxed enough for a weekday lunch or a seat at the bar, and it sits in the thick of Woodruff Road, the busiest stretch of dining and shopping in the Upstate. Grills built around live fire come down to how the kitchen works the flame, and this one has earned a steady, high-traffic following of regulars who keep it in their rotation.

Tucked inside the Grand Bohemian Lodge at the edge of Falls Park, Spirit & Bower is the kind of perch most of us around Greenville save for when we want to slow a night down. The room opens onto a stone bar and a verandah that looks straight out over the Reedy River and Liberty Bridge, so the setting does half the work before a drink ever lands. The heart of it is bourbon, a list that runs deep into rare and hard-to-find bottles, backed by seasonally shifting cocktails and a short, Southern-leaning menu of small plates built for sharing. Regulars reach for the Old Fashioned, and the Whiskey Business puts a house spin on that classic. The plates change with the calendar rather than staying fixed, running from smoky trout dip to Virginia ham and spicy pork sausage. The weekday Bower Hour, 4:30 to 6:30, is the easy way in for shareable bites and a drink before the evening fills out. What visitors tend to mention first is almost never the pour or the plate. It's the setting: the fireside room when it turns cool, the terrace at golden hour, the sound of the falls running under the conversation. Which seat becomes your seat, and whether you turn out to be a bourbon-at-dusk or a nightcap-by-the-fire kind of regular, is the part you sort out a visit at a time.

Tucked into the Village of West Greenville, the city's old textile-mill district turned arts quarter, this sits in the walkable stretch of galleries, studios, and makers along Pendleton Street. It runs as both a proper bar and a kitchen, so a quick drink has a way of turning into a full evening, or a meal into one more round. The neighborhood sets the tone as much as the room does, and on a good night the Village is out with this as one of the doors people are heading through.

Culver's
Culver's

Culver's

American Restaurants

Culver's started in Wisconsin and built its name on two things: the ButterBurger, a fresh-cooked patty served on a lightly buttered, toasted bun, and fresh frozen custard made in small batches through the day rather than left sitting in a machine. Alongside the burgers you'll find cheese curds, crinkle-cut fries, and dine-in service where you order at the counter and they bring the food out to you. The custard is where regulars pay closest attention: the Flavor of the Day rotates daily, so the concrete or sundae worth stopping in Duncan for depends entirely on which day you show up.

Down on the South Main stretch of downtown, this is one of those places that works two ways at once: a real bar and a full kitchen under one roof, drawing a dinner crowd and a drinks crowd into the same room. The rhythm leans toward evenings, runs later on weekend nights, and eases into a slower daytime service on Sundays. It reads less like a spot you plan a week around and more like one you fold into a night already happening downtown. Which side of it you show up for tends to set the tone for the whole visit.

Tucked into a record store on Stone Avenue, this family-run spot has done its own thing since 2005. The kitchen leans on two decades of the owner's travels, so the menu reads like a world tour that somehow still lands as American cooking: dishes pulled from everywhere, hand-prepared, with a vegetarian and vegan lineup far deeper than most kitchens bother with. Lunch and dinner run from steaks and Gulf shrimp to a Cubano regulars keep coming back for, alongside daily soup and seafood specials worth asking about. But Sunday brunch is the one people around here talk about, drawing a line at the door for a build-your-own Bloody Mary bar and plates like the Trucker's Special, a biscuit buried in gravy with eggs and hashbrowns. The room is funky and easygoing, down to the mismatched coffee mugs, with a dog-friendly patio and the occasional night of live music. Service gets called friendly and patient again and again, and they handle big groups and birthdays without blinking. And the record store is right there inside, the kind of thing you only really notice once you've wandered in.

Country Pride

American Restaurants

Country Pride is the full-service restaurant tucked inside the TA travel center just off I-85 in Duncan, so most of the folks in the booths are truckers and road-trippers giving both the rig and themselves a break. The kitchen sticks to American comfort standards: a hot breakfast, burgers, and plate dinners built to carry you to the next stretch of highway. It's a dependable stop more than a destination, which on a long haul is often exactly the point. If you're crossing the Upstate and want a real sit-down meal off the interstate instead of another drive-thru bag, this is a place that earns its regulars a refill at a time.

Rocky's Hot Chicken Shack
Rocky's Hot Chicken Shack

Rocky's Hot Chicken Shack

American Restaurants

Hot chicken here runs on one idea: you set the heat. Every order starts plain and climbs from there, mild up to extra hot, and the extra hot is no bluff. Plenty of regulars skip the spice entirely and still leave happy, which tells you the fried bird holds its own long before any cayenne gets involved. The Nashville-style chicken is the headliner, but the menu reaches well past it into Southern soul food. Rotisserie and grilled chicken, wings, salads, and a lineup of scratch-made dips and dressings round it out, most of it made fresh daily with naturally raised birds. It's an independent, locally owned kitchen that has been a fixture on this side of Greenville for well over a decade. The house touches are where it gets fun. That Zippy Ranch shows up across half the menu for a reason, and the featured plates lean scratch-made and a little unexpected, like cornmeal-crusted chicken under house peach-pepper jam and goat cheese, or a honey-mild tender with mango habanero aioli. There's a full catering operation too, and the patios welcome a leashed, well-behaved dog. Guests keep coming back for chicken fried fresh to order and served genuinely hot, not sitting under a lamp. Where you land on that heat scale is the one thing nobody can settle for you. Most regulars have a number they order every single time, and finding yours is half the fun.

Kitchen Sync - Lauren's Road
Kitchen Sync - Lauren's Road

Kitchen Sync - Lauren's Road

American Restaurants

Kitchen Sync opened on Laurens Road back in 2016 and spent most of the decade since as the top independently owned green-certified restaurant in the country, a distinction it held year after year through 2025. That is not just a plaque by the door. It shows up in how the kitchen sources its ingredients and cooks nearly everything from scratch. The menu wanders on purpose. A single page might carry a banh mi salad, a Thai pot pie, and low-country shrimp over grits, and it holds together because it all comes out of the same farm-fresh, made-in-house kitchen. There is a full bar and a real cocktail list to go with it. A few plates have become fixtures worth knowing about: the roasted and flash-fried beets under a smoky aioli, the chop-grilled Meyer natural burger, double-fried wings in a honey-sriracha glaze. Vegetarians and vegans get genuine options here, not an afterthought, which is rarer than it should be. The rest of the menu shifts with the season. Locals have kept it near the top of Greenville's dining lists for years, and it stays small enough that a table is worth planning for. Which globe-hopping plate becomes your regular is the kind of thing you sort out a visit at a time.

Most rooftop views downtown stop at the city. This one keeps going, out past the Reedy and over the rooftops to the Blue Ridge sitting along the horizon on a clear day. From the top of the Embassy Suites at RiverPlace, that longer sightline is what sets it apart from the other rooftops in town. The kitchen runs a seasonal, locally sourced menu of shareable plates and entrees that turns over through the year, so what you found in October will not be what is there in April. Behind the bar it is bottled house cocktails, reworked classics, regionally brewed beer and a curated wine list. Brunch runs Thursday through Sunday from 11 to 3, a wider window than most downtown kitchens keep. Worth knowing before you go: the way up is the elevator inside the Embassy Suites lobby, to the 8th floor. There is an indoor lounge plus two outdoor terraces, and outdoor tables are first come, first served, so a reservation gets you a table but not a guaranteed one in the open air. Leashed dogs are welcome on the terrace next to the bar, with a standing Yappy Hour on Tuesday afternoons. Valet is available at the hotel and the RiverPlace garage sits next door. Ask around and the view is what people bring up first, particularly in the hour before sunset, and it is the easy answer most of us give when someone visiting wants a drink somewhere memorable. Whether you end up on the terrace or in the lounge comes down to timing.
